Dear book sale volunteers,
In just two months, many helping hands from the Friends assisted the Foster Library staff, handling thousands of books and culling from the Foster collection and the Wright Library collection. The culminating book sale was a grand success thanks to the tireless tenacity of all involved.
Our dedicated and expert crew from the warehouse, Alberta Word, Merle Oberg, Dottie Gragg, Debra Rennick, Thelma Piercy, Diane Powers and Jane Anderson, personally scrutinized, decommissioned, processed and boxed roughly 10,000 titles from the Wright Library collection and excess from the children’s collection while Colleen, Teddy, Debbie and Marianne and Bill Coffey hand selected special books for sale at the bookstore and online. Thank you also to Woody Bretz for your trips to the warehouse to pick up supplies.
Thank you to Don Belless for delivering our tables from and back to the warehouse and to table wranglers Peter Lorito and Peter Thomson for loading and unloading and to Steven and Allan at Foster Library to help unload at the Topping Room.
Thank you to the Friday morning set up crew, Alberta, Thelma, Marianne and Bill Coffey, Joanne Fields, Keith Gordon, Gary Stephens and Merle Oberg. And to all the muscle behind moving the thousands of pounds of books out of the basement; Peter Lorito, Reuben and Juan, from City Corps, Steven, Allan and Michael Williams, Thelma’s grandson.
Saturday morning started with a group of 2 dozen waiting for the doors to open. Excitement was building as passers by wondered what big event was going on at the library. By mid day more books were obtained from the basement by a crew led by Alberta and the hard working student volunteers.
Once again we had an outstanding group of student volunteers keeping the tables neat, securing the back door and acting as friendly ambassadors. Many thanks and high praise goes to this fantastic group of future Friends volunteers and Board members! By first name only they are; Kylah, Maddy, Amelia, Roger, Xander, Lorena, Itzel, Elizabeth, Halina, Valeria, David, Peter, Jenny, Joselin and Suvee on Saturday. And on Sunday; Jason N., Roger, Amelia, Suvee, Jenny, Joselin, Tatum, Lorena, Elizabeth, Itzel, Valeria, and Jason B.
Thank you to those who packed up all the unsold books on Sunday. Thank you Peter Lorito for hauling 46 boxes of books to the loading dock for pick up by Better World Books.
While the main objective of this project was to refresh the collection, we were also able to raise $1041 for the libraries and an awareness of San Buenaventura Friends of the Library. I hope it was a rewarding experience for all.
With gratitude,
Kathy Thomson, President, San Buenaventura Friends of the Library
THANK YOU AND CONGRATULATIONS FOR A GREAT FUNDRAISER AND COMMUNITY
OUTREACH EVENT!
A tremendous amount of gratitude goes out to all our illustrious and industrious book sale volunteers for a superior effort this weekend (Oct. 13-14, 2012) at the Dudley House book sale. Once again praise goes to the maestro of the event, Chuck Carlson, without whose engineering and logistical expertise, these events could not be done.
Thank you to our many volunteers, the warehouse staff who diligently and meticulously prices and sorts the inventory, Don Bellis, Peter Lorito, Jane Middleton, Peter Thomson, Keith Gordon, the many Saturday morning book wranglers and set up crew,(all of whose names I do not have unfortunately), Art Marshall, Berta Steele, Pat Harter, Bill and Marsha Wakelee, Marcia Ortiz, Dottie Gragg, Diane Powers, Debra Renick, Alberta Word, (if I have missed any of the set up ladies please let me know), Jean Nickel, Barbara Paarmann, Marianne Coffey, Matt Byrne, Blake from the Dudley House staff, and all our student volunteers coordinator, Linda Kapala, and student volunteers, Emily, Jake, Erika, Chloe, Ryan, Wesley, Valeria, Niki, Lia, Nick, Elysse, Sidney, Kassia, Halina, Sarah, Paul, and Glenda and the take down crew, Curtis, Peter L., and Bill. I apologize if I did not add all names to the list. Volunteers were moving at the speed of light, packing and loading 24+ tables of books, it was hard to follow the tremendous amount of physical activity, even in 85 degree weather!! We are very fortunate to have dedication such as this in our community to support the Friends efforts.
The Dudley House was happy to have us use their facility. They have invited us back. We will have a meeting in February to discuss the possibility of a repeat performance.

The San Buenaventura Friends of the Library Bookstore has a “new look”. Now, you can actually FIND US- located on the first floor of E.P. Foster Library, Main St. in Ventura. You can’t miss “F.O.L. Bookstore” painted in impressive gray and white letters with black highlights on the windows of the store.
And, we are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 7 p.m. to accommodate those who work.
On the second floor (children’s area) the Friends of the Library have been able to place a bookshelf to make additional children’s books available for sale. These books are priced from 25 cents to one dollar. Payment is on the honor system. There is a grey metal box on the top shelf where you drop your money. The librarians are not obligated to make change for your purchase. The three tiered bookshelf is located to the right of the second story entrance between the copier and the FOL donation box.
These are truly rock-bottom bargain prices for all children and teen books.
